Here are some pictures of the seaport of Peterhead as it exists today, taken on one of our research trips to Scotland.  This town was one of the venues in my book Dark Birthright.  Today it is a fishing port and serves the oil industry with offshore platforms.  We stayed here in 2004 at the Palace Hotel and consulted a historian.

The plaque in front of it says:

Fisher Jessie Sculpture - Peterhead

The Fisher Jessie sculpture was unveiled on 30 April 2001.  The sculpture was made by Scott Associates Sculpture and Design and named by Peter James Buchan after his Great Great Grandmother Jessie Buchan who was known as 'Fisher Jessie'.  The sculpture depicts the traditional trade between the fishing and agricultural communities.  Peterhead women like Jessie would carry fish in the creel on their backs, out into the countryside, to be exchanged with rural people for farm produce.  The farm produce would be carried in hand held baskets.  Trade between the fishing and farming communities continued like this up until the early 1950's.

Peterhead was a charming place to stay.

I would love to see them emphasize their tourism.
